Phosphorus, as well as nitrogen, are nutrients that can stimulate aggressive and persistent algae growth which can be hard to manage.

Aeration increases oxygen levels in the pond water, and by doing so, may help to reduce phosphorus in several ways.

Higher oxygen levels support aerobic bacteria in the pond, which can consume, or sequester phosphorus. As well, higher oxygen concentrations near the bottom of the pond, actually improve the binding of phosphorus, which can hold it in the bottom sediment where algae cannot use it for fuel.

Over the years we've had a lot of good feedback on our Biosphere Pro pond treatment. This is a unique system that time releases beneficial bacteria into a pond over a full month (35 days actually). These microbes help to reduce excessive nutrients that feed unwanted growth, and they serve as an excellent, eco-friendly pond cleaner.

Even though over the nearly 20 years that we've been working with this product, we end up with a lot of happy customers, we've never proactively asked for photos or video of the end result.

Fortunately a few customers like Ben from Southeast Iowa are proactive and decided to take pictures of the pond during the initial treatment phase use the Biospheres. And he was kind enough to share them with us last week.

In the video you can see the condition of the pond as it start to experience increasing algae growth. As Ben said, "I had a feeling it was about to take off and wanted to try to keep it from blooming so much."

It looks like in the end, he succeeded, timing his initial treatment to show the gradual (and safe) reduction in the algae bloom...without the use of any chemicals or algaecides.

It can be unsightly, annoying, and sometimes even dangerous. But it isn't really the problem.

It's a symptom of the problem.

When you're looking to diagnose and remedy an algae bloom, the key really is to go deeper (no pun intended) and look at what's really driving the growth in your pond.

The culprit is always high nutrients.

Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for algae growth, and they can come from various sources, including fertilizer runoff, animal waste, and decaying organic matter in the pond. Excessive nutrient levels can lead to an overgrowth of algae, which can then
create an unbalanced ecosystem in the pond.

So the real key to managing algae growth is to target those nutrients and reduce them. You can do this in various ways...through managing runoff and incoming influences with vegetative buffer strips, settling bogs, or dredging if a pond has a lot of muck build up on the bottom.

Using proper aeration, along with supplemental beneficial bacteria can help keep nutrient levels in check as well.

So while algaecides can be useful and even necessary at times, they are not the best way to manage and algae problem long term. Go to the source of what's really driving the algae blooms and you'll be accurately targeting the real problem.
http://www.pondalgaesolutions.com/ponderings/Why-Does-My-Pond-Smell-BadWhy Does My Pond Smell Bad?Some ponds may smell bad due to the buildup of organic matter and other debris, which can cause the...2023-05-04T12:44:57-05:002023-05-04T12:48:40-05:00Pond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.comPond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.com
Some ponds may smell bad due to the buildup of organic matter and other debris, which can cause the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms that produce foul-smelling gases like hydrogen sulfide and methane. These gases are commonly referred to as pond gas or pond muck.

The buildup of organic matter in a pond can be caused by a variety of factors, including excessive nutrients (such as from fertilizer runoff or animal waste), dead plant material, and animal waste. When these materials break down, they can create anoxic (low oxygen) conditions in the pond, which promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria that produce the foul-smelling gases.

Other factors that can contribute to bad odors in a pond include low water levels, stagnant water, and high temperatures. In some cases, the presence of certain types of algae or aquatic plants can also contribute to bad smells.

To prevent bad odors in a pond, it's important to maintain good water quality through regular maintenance practices such as removing debris and excess vegetation, ensuring proper nutrient balance, and promoting oxygenation of the water through aeration. Proper pond management practices can also help to control algae and bacterial growth and promote a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
http://www.pondalgaesolutions.com/ponderings/What-Does-Aeration-Do-For-A-PondWhat Does Aeration Do For A Pond?Aeration is the process of introducing air into a body of water, and it can be used to improve the...2023-01-17T21:16:06-06:002023-01-17T21:17:46-06:00Pond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.comPond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.com
Aeration is the process of introducing air into a body of water, and it can be used to improve the overall health and quality of a pond. There have been several studies that have investigated the effects of aeration on ponds, and some of the key findings include:

Pond aeration can increase the oxygen levels in a pond, which is important for the health and survival of fish and other aquatic organisms.

Aeration can improve the circulation of water in a pond, which can help to reduce the buildup of harmful substances such as algae and bacteria.

Diffused bottom aeration can help to reduce the amount of organic material present in a pond, which can lead to a reduction in the amount of nutrients available for the growth of algae and other aquatic plants.

Pond aeration can also help to improve water clarity and reduce the visibility of pollutants in the water.

Aeration can help to reduce the risk of fish kills and improve the overall health of the fish population.

Overall, aeration is an effective way to improve the overall health of a pond, and studies have shown that it can be an effective tool for controlling the growth of algae, improving water quality, and promoting the survival of fish and other aquatic organisms.
http://www.pondalgaesolutions.com/ponderings/Is-Algae-A-Bad-Thing-To-Have-In-A-PondIs Algae A Bad Thing To Have In A Pond?Pond algae, like many things in life, can be both good, and bad.
Algae can be beneficial as it serves as a food source for aquatic animals and can also help to oxygenate the water. However, excessive growth of algae can cause problems such as reducing the amount of oxygen in the water, clogging filters, and creating an unsightly appearance.

Additionally, certain types of algae, such as harmful algal blooms, can be toxic to fish and other aquatic life. It is important to maintain a balance of algae in a pond.

The key word here, is balance.

Maintaining a well-balanced pond involves several steps:

Properly managing the pond's water chemistry: This includes monitoring pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient levels.

Managing the pond's population: This includes controlling the number of fish and other aquatic animals living in the pond.

Preventing the overgrowth of algae: This can be done by limiting the amount of sunlight that reaches the pond and by removing excess nutrients that can feed algae growth through good filtration, adding aeration, conducting regular water changes, adding desirable plants (think lilies or hyacinth), or through the use of beneficial bacteria.

Maintaining proper and adequate filtration: This can help to keep the water clean and free of debris.

Regularly monitoring and maintaining the pond: This includes regularly testing the water, cleaning the pond, and removing any dead or dying plants and critters.

Stocking the right species of fish in the right number, and feeding them correctly is also important to keep the ecosystem in balance.

Keep an eye on invasive species as well and take action if necessary.

If so, chances are it's duckweed.

While a small amount of duckweed can actually be beneficial to your pond, allowing fish to lay eggs and find shelter from predators, too much of it can create an oxygen shortage which can harm ecosystem balance.

So if you’re dealing with a duckweed invasion , here’s how to intelligently treat or kill it in your pond.

Physical removal: Skimming or netting the duckweed off the surface of the water can be effective, but it must be done regularly to prevent regrowth.

Beneficial Microbes: Our preferred method is to use beneficial microbes and aeration to help lower nutrients in the water column that feed the duckweed. You must apply the microbes in the proper dosage ahead of the actual duckweed blooms for the best results.

Chemical control: Algaecides and herbicides can be used to kill duckweed, but they may also harm other aquatic life and should be used with caution.

Biological control: Introducing natural predators such as grass carp or tilapia can help control duckweed populations.

Nutrient management: Duckweed thrives in nutrient-rich water, so reducing the amount of fertilizer used in the area surrounding the pond and properly maintaining septic systems can help prevent its growth.

It is important to note that a combination of methods is often necessary for effective control and the most effective method for controlling duckweed in a pond may vary depending on the specific pond conditions and surrounding environment.

It is also important to consult with a professional, as the use of chemicals or introduction of species might have unintended consequences.
http://www.pondalgaesolutions.com/ponderings/EPA-Suggestions-For-Managing-Cyanobacterial-Toxic-Algae-BloomsEPA Suggestions For Managing Cyanobacterial Toxic Algae BloomsHere's a summary from the EPA on some of the things one can do to prevent or manage a toxic algae...2020-04-24T13:47:00-05:002020-04-24T13:53:38-05:00Pond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.comPond Algae Solutionshttp://www.pondalgaesolutions.comsupport@klmsolutions.com
Here's a summary from the EPA on some of the things one can do to prevent or manage a toxic algae bloom in their pond. Compared to 15 years ago when we got started, there are way more microbials on the market today. And it's for a good reason. For many people they work to improve a pond without the use of chemicals.

They make excellent, natural pond cleaners. They can reduce muck and sludge, clear up various water quality problems, neutralize the byproducts of fish waste, and much more.

However, I think some people try them, and end up disappointed. They don't see the results they wanted. And to be sure, I would not say this, or any product, is a silver bullet for everything.

But, a common mistake with good microbials that will most surely lead to poor results is improper dosing.

This video talks about how to avoid that and how to get the best results with microbials.

Of all the videos we've ever done, this has been one of the most watched. The audio isn't terrific but the information is invaluable. Along with many things of late at PAS, we have plans to update this one as well...but for now, this oldie but goodie still has a lot of relevance.

Along with the commentary in the video, I wanted to add another myth that's circulated around...and I get asked about it all the time.

What do you think of pond dye for controlling algae?

It's a good question.

Don't get me wrong...I like dyes and tints. The one's we use are food grade quality...no kidding...they are that safe and non-toxic. And they can help deflect or absorb sunlight that is penetrating into the pond...really limiting it's effect on any plant matter in there.

But truthfully, dye alone, isn't usually going to be enough if some algae is really getting the upper hand. Especially if it's breaching the surface of the pond...where it can get access to the light...the dye simply isn't going to help with that.

We do use dye frequently enough though...in ponds that have a lot of shallow areas...6 feet or less let's say. It's a good way to stack the deck against algae and underwater weeds.

You may still want to use good aeration, microbials, or as a last resort, and algaecide with dye as a supportive component in your management plan...sometimes it just makes good sense to try it.

http://www.pondalgaesolutions.com/ponderings/Going-Green-And-Eco-FriendlyGoing Green And Eco-FriendlyPond care doesn't have to involve harsh chemicals in every case.
To get a system that will really help your pond do better, you have to get one of ample size, power, and coverage. And for larger waters this costs some money.

Cheap systems often break down or end up being more trouble than they're worth so if you want something really dependable and long lasting, you'll want to spend a bit more.

But sometimes cash flow isn't all that great. We know how that goes.

So to make the purchase of some of our more expensive items a little easier to bare, we've implemented the Bill Me Later finance program offered by PayPal. We've used this personally before and really love it. It makes larger purchases pretty painless and you usually have a minimum of six months to pay off the balance.

Any order over $99 qualifies so be sure to look for it in our checkout process.
